Edible Park Activities
Take a closer look at the Edible Park’s activities and the actors involved!
Youth activities in the park
During the summer, the City of Helsinki Youth Services organise free-of-charge open activities for young people aged under 29 years in the park. The focus of the activities is on offering nature experiences on the park grounds and around the Mustikkamaa island.
The urban community garden hosts various activities related to art, natural cosmetics and herbs. Young people have the opportunity to participate in caring for chickens, cultivation, planting, building hotels for bees and relaxing in nature. The park has hammocks, so everyone can come and hang out, enjoying relaxed summer days.
The park also includes various yard games, and the instructors organise excursions around Mustikkamaa.
Chicken Gang activities
The park’s chickens are cared for by a group of volunteers who are private individuals and cooperate with Youth Services. The chickens are tended to every day: they are fed and supplied with fresh water, and their faeces are cleaned. The chickens also spend time outdoors in the yard, so it is important to keep your dog on a leash in the area.
During the summer season, young people can participate in caring for the chickens under the guidance of the park’s youth worker on specific days. If you are interested in joining the Chicken Gang, you can contact the park’s instructors for more information on how to join the team of volunteers.
Voluntary farming
The farming in the park is mainly managed by volunteer farmers who are also private individuals. They collaborate with Youth Services and Slow Food Helsinki.
During the growing season, the volunteer farmers organise voluntary work parties. You can find more information on the cultivation group’s website: https://sphelsinki.wordpress.com
The crops are harvested and shared by the volunteers. The park’s crops, berries or herbs may not be harvested independently. Please contact the park instructors for more information.
Summer café
The summer café is operated by the local 4H association’s summer entrepreneurship programme, in which the City of Helsinki is involved to support young people’s summer entrepreneurship. Young entrepreneurs are responsible for their operations in accordance with the values of the Edible Park.
Youth Services have been awarded the EcoCompass certificate.
