Young talent from Helsinki Flow School and DJ Academy at Flow Festival
After Helsinki Flow School and the You X festival, Eloize Suhtala Uvalic had the opportunity to get involved in the production of Flow Festival.
Flow Festival is once again the destination of thousands of festival-goers in Suvilahti on 11–13 August. Flow Festival is an urban city and music festival with a wide range of artists of different genres. The festival also emphasises visual arts and culture. The preparations have been started well in advance, as there is more than enough work to do until the start of the festival and even after the event. Once again, there are new event industry employees involved in the work. Helsinki Flow School and DJ Academy Helsinki and the young people who have honed their skills on their courses are an important part of this large-scale project.
Helsinki Flow School is a joint course of the City of Helsinki and Flow Festival where young people get to know the event industry and the job opportunities it offers. DJ Academy Helsinki, on the other hand, is the perfect place for anyone interested in the DJ culture. At DJ Academy, you can learn things such as mixing, scratching and juggling. The workshops are intended for people of all ages and skill levels, no prior knowledge is required, and they are an opportunity to play exactly the kind of music you want to play. The young people of Helsinki Flow School also organise the annual You X festival, which is planned and implemented completely by the young people themselves.
For Eloize Suhtala Uvalic, the opportunity to get involved in Flow Festival came through Flow School and the You X project. Eloize considers both experiences good. “It was very fun and meeting new people was nice. I liked learning how the event is actually made possible and what it involves,” Eloize says. Eloize would encourage anyone interested in the training to get involved: “Come with an open mind! You’ll get to know a lot of different people. You’ll learn so much about the world of events and the event industry. And on top of all that, you will also be having fun!”
For Eloize, the main reason to come to Flow Festival is its atmosphere: “The atmosphere will be amazing. Lots of people, lots of good music! I think the vibe at Flow is always so good that the atmosphere alone is reason enough to come here!”
This is the fourth time that the City of Helsinki and Flow Festival organise Helsinki Flow School. The course has places for 100 young people. Students are selected based on their applications. The application period will be announced at a later date. Young people who have completed the course have the opportunity to apply for a place in the production team of the You X festival or for an internship at Flow Festival. The new term of DJ Academy starts on 21 August 2023 at 16.00–19.00 in Tiivistämö, Suvilahti. The course runs all year round, usually according to the opening hours of Tiivistämö. You can join at any time. In addition to the course activities, there are events and masterclass classes from other professionals in the industry. The courses run throughout the year and, in addition to group instruction, there is also individual instruction available.
