Background of the café

Café Raparperimeri is a youth-led initiative, planned and operated by local young people. It first opened in summer 2019 at the Kumpula School Garden and employed 18 young people in various lengths of contracts. The relaxed atmosphere and fresh baked goods made by the youth attracted customers of all ages.

The idea for the café emerged in autumn 2018 during participatory budgeting workshops organized by the Pasila Youth Work Unit. Ruutibudjetti (now known as the Youth Budget) is a participatory budgeting model where decisions about youth leisure activities and services are made together with the youth. Some of the young people employed at the café had already taken part in planning it in spring 2019: they came up with the name, designed the logo, the menu, and the program. The café also participated in the Harvest Festival, the Koskela Village Festival, and the Garden of Horrors at the school garden.
