Introduction

Environment, equality, education, safety, health. I consider the promotion of all these issues very important and I want Helsinki to be as tolerant and safe place as is possible for all people and for everyone to have the same rights regardless of their background.

Answers to the election machine

Schools should have more days during which they only serve vegetarian food.

Eating too much meat is unhealthy, and meat is not even necessary in modern diets. Vegetarian days improve pupils’ health and familiarise them with vegetarian food. Vegetables are also often just as good, if not better, sources of protein than meat.

Schools should focus on grouping more extensively than now.

Group cohesion helps group members get to know each other better, make friends more easily and feel safer and more confident.

Distance learning needs to be established as a permanent learning method in addition to contact teaching.

Everything that is taught through contact teaching can also be learned through distance learning, and for some pupils distance learning is the better option. Pupils must be offered the option of distance learning if they want it.

The competitiveness of young people’s sports activities should be reduced.

In many recreational activities, active participation and the improvement of skills mean that after a certain point the young person is expected to become competitive in the activity. Not everyone wants to compete, however. Young people should have the option of engaging in recreational activities without competing.

The City of Helsinki should primarily offer summer jobs to those young people who do not yet have work experience.

If inexperienced people are not given a summer job, they will remain inexperienced, meaning that they will not be as well-equipped to work and find a job as those who get a summer job based on their prior experience. Inexperienced people will never become experienced if they do not gain experience from anywhere.

The public spaces in Helsinki should maintain the division between women’s and men’s toilets.

Gender hardly plays a role in the use of a toilet. The division into women and men’s toilets is also a poor solution for trans people, who seldom have the option of using the toilet for their gender. Of course, I am not denying that this solution also has its downsides.

Helsinki should start offering free public transport to those under 18.

Free public transport would give everyone the same chance to travel, regardless of their family’s income or residential area. Of course, making public transport free of charge would cost the government, but decisions that promote equal opportunities are worth the price.

It would be better if there were no e-scooters in Helsinki.

Although e-scooters are practical, they involve many risks. People are able to use e-scooters under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants, even though e-scooters are relatively fast vehicles that are sometimes difficult to control. They are also often used pretty irresponsibly.

For a member of the Youth Council, pushing their own goals through is a more important quality than agreeing on compromises.

The opinions of the Youth Council candidates vary so much that the candidates must make compromises in order to make decisions properly. It is unlikely that anyone can push their goals through exactly as they originally planned. Matters must be discussed, and an agreement must be reached.

On which topics would you like the Youth Council to focus, in particular? Select the three that are the most important to you.

Climate change and nature conservation; Equal opportunities and equality; Schools and education

Matters related to the climate/environment are important, as climate change is a major problem and climate action can no longer wait. Promoting education and equality also means promoting safety, and possibly health. These are very important elements in young people’s lives.
