Introduction

I’m Avery, a 15-year-old dark-skinned trans girl. I attend Hiidenkiven peruskoulu school, with focus on media studies. I live in Oulunkylä, Helsinki. I would be interested in promoting almost any issue. School meals, youth safety, climate change. I will do my best to promote them all! Even though I’m looking to help other Youth Council members realise their dreams, I also have my own ideas that I would like to promote. For example, I would like to promote the teaching of health education, sexual education in particular, because it is often not taught correctly and/or diversely enough at schools. I also want to promote young people’s recreational activities so that applying for these activities and attending them would be easier/more affordable and there would be more activities to choose from.

Hobbies: My interests include scriptwriting, making music and photography. Sometimes I also draw. I’m not really that good at it, though.

Answers to the election machine

Schools should have more days during which they only serve vegetarian food.

I think that vegetarian days should be increased because everyone should get used to vegetarian food. Not all people eat meat, for one, but schools should also try to promote the taste of vegetarian food.

Schools should focus on grouping more extensively than now.

I do not really have an opinion on whether to push for grouping at school, but I do not entirely agree with this either. There are many people who have anxiety or other mental health problems and cannot or do not want to be with others.

Distance learning needs to be established as a permanent learning method in addition to contact teaching.

I think that distance learning should be established as a permanent learning method in comprehensive schools and upper secondary education because there are many people who cannot or do not want to be around other people, and they find it easier to do their schoolwork on their own.

The competitiveness of young people’s sports activities should be reduced.

In my opinion, there should be less competition in young people’s sports activities because this competitive environment can upset some young people.

The City of Helsinki should primarily offer summer jobs to those young people who do not yet have work experience.

The City of Helsinki should offer jobs to young people who have no work experience, because it is possible that they will not get a suitable job when they get older because they have no previous work experience.

The public spaces in Helsinki should maintain the division between women’s and men’s toilets.

Helsinki should completely abolish the division between ‘men’s’ and ‘women’s’ toilets for two reasons. Firstly, building two separate toilet facilities is a waste of Helsinki’s resources, and there is no appropriate reason for having two toilets. Secondly, some people do not identify with these two binary genders. Also, for some trans people, having to choose between these two toilets can be psychologically and mentally harmful.

Helsinki should start offering free public transport to those under 18.

Helsinki should offer free public transport to those under 18, as some young people’s parents may be particularly poor and unable to pay for a ticket for their child.

It would be better if there were no e-scooters in Helsinki.

E-scooters help many young people and adults get from one place to another, just like public transport. So, if they were removed from Helsinki altogether, many people would not be able to get from one place to another as easily.

For a member of the Youth Council, pushing their own goals through is a more important quality than agreeing on compromises.

I think that the most important quality for a Youth Council member is the ability to listen and work in a group.

On which topics would you like the Youth Council to focus, in particular? Select the three that are the most important to you.

Equal opportunities and equality; Leisure time and recreation; Healthcare and mental health

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I consider equality to be really important. I would like to make things safe and fair for me and all other members of this minority.
