Introduction

I’m a first-year student at SYK. I am interested in city politics and, in particular, public spending. Vote for me at the Helsinki Youth Council elections and I promise to make sure that we will only make smart decisions.

Answers to the election machine

Schools should have more days during which they only serve vegetarian food.

The food served at school should be nutritious and tasty, since if the pupils don’t like it, they won’t eat it. The drawbacks of this are larger than the benefits of vegetarian food.

Schools should focus on grouping more extensively than now.

Absolutely! Learning and cooperation between pupils are a lot more efficient when everyone is able to work with each other.

Distance learning needs to be established as a permanent learning method in addition to contact teaching.

Distance learning simply does not work in comprehensive schools. In upper secondary studies, taking courses independently is already possible right now.

The competitiveness of young people’s sports activities should be reduced.

Youth should be offered hobby groups at different levels so that everyone can find the level best suited to them.

The City of Helsinki should primarily offer summer jobs to those young people who do not yet have work experience.

The City of Helsinki should carry out employment measures that increase the total employment and reduce youth unemployment.

The public spaces in Helsinki should maintain the division between women’s and men’s toilets.

The situation now is good.

Helsinki should start offering free public transport to those under 18.

This action would probably increase Helsinki’s municipal tax rate, which we cannot afford to do. A small fee for using public transport is well-founded.

It would be better if there were no e-scooters in Helsinki.

E-scooters are a great mode of transport for replacing car trips with a more environmentally friendly alternative. Young people should be included in the negotiations between the City and e-scooter companies.

For a member of the Youth Council, pushing their own goals through is a more important quality than agreeing on compromises.

The Youth Council’s most important duty is to make the young people’s voice heard in the City’s decision-making, not to lobby for the members’ own goals.

On which topics would you like the Youth Council to focus, in particular? Select the three that are the most important to you.

Young people’s influencing opportunities; Schools and education; Summer jobs

I think the Youth Council should focus on current important themes and bring up the matters important to young people to public discussion.
