Introduction

Hi, I’m Aisha Mahmood, a 15-year-old from Kulosaari. We young people have a voice that we should use to make sure we have the best possible future. Staying quiet will not help at all. I am running for the Youth Council because I want to make a difference in our society and make sure as many young voices are heard as is possible. I want to bring equality to Helsinki, instead of discrimination. I would be really grateful if you voted for me.

Hobbies: In my spare time, I enjoy designing clothes and painting 🙂

Answers to the election machine

Schools should have more days during which they only serve vegetarian food.

We need more vegetarian days at schools, because many pupils have never tasted vegetarian food and do not know why it is even available. When there are also vegetarian days, many young people will be better familiarised with eating vegetarian food.

Schools should focus on grouping more extensively than now.

This should be focused on more heavily, so that people can get to know others better and also spend time with them. There are also school pupils who are shy and afraid to get to know others. Grouping/programming makes it easier to express your views and generally easier to get to know others and make new friends.

Distance learning needs to be established as a permanent learning method in addition to contact teaching.

This is mostly a good idea, but it also needs to be made sure that pupils do not have a lot of distance learning. Distance learning suits some pupils, while others prefer contact teaching.

The competitiveness of young people’s sports activities should be reduced.

Yes, it should be reduced. Many young people have other things to do than concentrate on sports. Competition in hobbies may also create bad feelings for those who did not win.

The City of Helsinki should primarily offer summer jobs to those young people who do not yet have work experience.

Many young people cannot get jobs because they have no work experience. It is difficult to gain work experience, even though many companies offer those ‘learn about working life’ jobs. The City of Helsinki should offer separate opportunities for those with no work experience to make it easier to look for work in the future.

The public spaces in Helsinki should maintain the division between women’s and men’s toilets.

Gender-neutral toilets could be added to public spaces, but I would also keep separate men’s and women’s toilets. Women and men have different needs when it comes to going to the toilet.

Helsinki should start offering free public transport to those under 18.

This should be introduced in Helsinki, as young people do not have enough money to buy a separate bus ticket.

It would be better if there were no e-scooters in Helsinki.

For a member of the Youth Council, pushing their own goals through is a more important quality than agreeing on compromises.
