Introduction

Heyyy! I am Shyreen, I’m a 15-year-old from Helsingin uusi yhteiskoulu school. If I made it to the Youth Council, I would definitely want to make sure that young people’s voices are heard and to promote equality and environmental friendliness. I’m a very outgoing, trustworthy and cooperative person. I am the chair of my school’s student association board and very active in all possible activities. I feel that the Youth Council would definitely be a unique opportunity to make a difference, and I hope to be included! I am not perfect, but I promise to do my best!

Hobbies: I do not have any particular hobbies, but in my spare time, I like to bake, cook and work out.

Answers to the election machine

Schools should have more days during which they only serve vegetarian food.

Few young people eat very healthily these days. Adding more vegetarian days at schools will make young people’s diets healthier. Vegetarian days are also more environmentally friendly because they reduce the use of meat.

Schools should focus on grouping more extensively than now.

Grouping is important, as knowing your own group increases the group’s feeling of togetherness, sense of security and trust in each other.

Distance learning needs to be established as a permanent learning method in addition to contact teaching.

I personally did not like distance learning because I am a very sociable person. I also think that lessons are much more successful when the teachers and pupils are in the same place.

The competitiveness of young people’s sports activities should be reduced.

Some young people are very competitive, so increasing competitiveness may cause conflicts. Others, on the other hand, cannot stand the pressure of competition, so it may cause them to quit the hobby altogether.

The City of Helsinki should primarily offer summer jobs to those young people who do not yet have work experience.

Work experience is important in some jobs, but it is also important to take beginners into account.

The public spaces in Helsinki should maintain the division between women’s and men’s toilets.

The division should be maintained because some people need separate toilets. However, it is important to have gender-neutral toilets.

Helsinki should start offering free public transport to those under 18.

It would be good for young people, but it also has its disadvantages, such as an increase in municipal taxes.

It would be better if there were no e-scooters in Helsinki.

They are convenient, but it is very annoying when people leave them lying around in the middle of footpaths, for example.

For a member of the Youth Council, pushing their own goals through is a more important quality than agreeing on compromises.

It is very important to respect and take into account other people’s opinions. Discussing matters with everyone helps us look at them from many different perspectives.

On which topics would you like the Youth Council to focus, in particular? Select the three that are the most important to you.

Young people’s influencing opportunities; Equal opportunities and equality; Safety

Young people’s opinions should be taken into account because few adults can truly consider things from a young person’s point of view. It is also important for young people to feel safe in a familiar place. Every young person should also be treated the same regardless of religion, colour or culture.
