Introduction

Hi there! I’m Leevi Hyytinen from Jätkäsaari, Helsinki and this is my first time running for the Youth Council. I want to improve safety, mental health services and young people’s influencing opportunities and their chances of having hobbies in Helsinki. These things are very important to me personally, and I feel that there is a lot of room for improvement in all of them. I am running for the Youth Council because if I happened to be elected, I would be able to start working on these issues. I’ve lived in Helsinki my whole life, so I know how to make this city better and how to fix these problems. If I were elected to the Youth Council, I would be better able to voice my and your opinions and I would have a better chance to influence Helsinki’s problems.

Answers to the election machine

Schools should have more days during which they only serve vegetarian food.

I do not think that anyone should be forced to eat vegetarian food. Of course, the idea is good, but I think that this might cause many people to skip meals more often because they do not like vegetarian food.

Schools should focus on grouping more extensively than now.

Schools should definitely put more effort and time into grouping. Grouping would reduce social exclusion and strengthen the sense of community.

Distance learning needs to be established as a permanent learning method in addition to contact teaching.

Distance learning must definitely be established. Distance learning allows you to attend class even if you are ill or the teacher is ill. Distance learning also makes it possible to have distance learning days if there are only one or two lessons at school.

The competitiveness of young people’s sports activities should be reduced.

I do not think that competitiveness should be reduced, but nor should it be increased. Competitiveness creates its own kind of sporting spirit, but it is certainly not for everyone and therefore should not be increased.

The City of Helsinki should primarily offer summer jobs to those young people who do not yet have work experience.

The City of Helsinki must definitely offer summer jobs to those who have no work experience. Work experience can be hard to gain, but once you have it, it makes it easier to find a job. I think that this would make it easier for young people to get a summer job.

The public spaces in Helsinki should maintain the division between women’s and men’s toilets.

I think that this division should be maintained because I am used to this system. People may feel a little uncomfortable if both genders use the same toilets at the same time.

Helsinki should start offering free public transport to those under 18.

Helsinki must definitely offer free public transport for minors. Free public transport would make it easier and cheaper for young people to get around.

It would be better if there were no e-scooters in Helsinki.

In my opinion, Helsinki must certainly not do away with e-scooters. They make it much easier and faster for young people to get around. Of course, the regulations concerning them should be improved to make them safer to use, but e-scooters should definitely be retained.

For a member of the Youth Council, pushing their own goals through is a more important quality than agreeing on compromises.

I think both are important. A council member needs to be able to push hard for their goals, but it is hard to achieve success with your goals without compromising. I think both qualities are equally important.

On which topics would you like the Youth Council to focus, in particular? Select the three that are the most important to you.

Leisure time and recreation; Safety; Healthcare and mental health

The Youth Council should focus on these issues in particular because they are really important to me and the young people of Helsinki. These three things have a major impact on the wellbeing of young people in Helsinki and should be developed in particular.
