Summer of 2026 at Kumpula School Garden
Description
Stop by for a cup of coffee, attend an event, sign up for a summer camp or volunteer activities, or just drop by to enjoy an atmospheric garden environment in the middle of the city.
Café Raparperimeri, a summer café planned and run by young people, will be open in the area in June and July, and there will be various events from spring to autumn.
The Children’s and Young People’s Gardening Association will organise various summer camps for primary school children on the themes of farming, science, detective work and environmental art. After the camps, harvest days will be held for the camp participants and their families well into the autumn. To sign up for the camps, go to lastenpuutarha.fi
Kumpula School Garden is a unique garden where children and young people cultivate useful and ornamental plants using organic methods. Summer jobs are available for young people, the duties including gardening, camp and café work. You can also apply to volunteer as a gardener or a camp assistant. If you join for at least a week (6 h/day), you will receive a certificate which will be useful when looking for a job. The school garden also hosts the Basilika garden family club, in which families learn about cultivation together under the guidance of a gardener.
Occasionally, you can also see horses at work in the school garden, turning the soil instead of tractors. In addition to the horses, the garden features chickens in the summer, tended by a group of volunteers from the local area.
Kumpula School Garden is located in the shelter of spruce trees near the junction of Mäkelänkatu and Koskelantie, next to the Kumpula allotment garden, at Vähänkyröntie 3–6. Kumpula School Garden was established in 1928 and has since been providing cultivation activities for children and young people every summer. Today, the activities are organised by the City of Helsinki Youth Services together with the Children’s and Young People’s Gardening Association.
