Reimagining Picturebooks - workshop for kids and adults
Description
Do picturebooks reflect your experiences or that of children around you? “Reimagining Picturebooks” is a workshop series consisting of four sessions that explores the art of writing and illustrating children's picturebooks through personal experiences. These workshops are open to anyone interested in exploring experimental writing and illustration, regardless of their prior experience in storytelling or visual art.
We especially encourage children (ages nine and up) to attend with an adult family member as we will explore how storytelling can incorporate multiple perspectives from different generations. Adults who wish to participate without a child are also welcome.
In the first session, participants will have access to a variety of books for examination and are encouraged to bring books from home, in any language, for discussion. The group may also visit the Itäkeskus Library to borrow books for further exploration.
The workshop instructor is Dahlia El Broul. Dahlia El Broul is an artist and educator from New York City and has lived in Finland for the past ten years. Her artistic practice investigates children’s picturebook production and critical pedagogy—crisscrossing the terrain of illustration, collaborative practices, theory, education, critique, and imaginings of the possible, to support the social conditions for collective work.
